Vacation in Turkmenistan

In Turkmenistan 10 things to do

While its historical relationship with its neighboring countries is drastically different from that of Turkmenistan, it is a totally unusual region. As in the region’s modern states, the Great Silk Road route passed here, strong kingdoms and empires rose, lasting for hundreds of miles and now the dust that fell from the walls is reminiscent of wretched tyrant and brutal conquerors and great thinkers of time. For travelers who want to spend their holidays in Turkmenistan, enjoying all the country’s beauty with its coasts, deserts, mountains and oasis, spinning wonderful carpets and breeding beautiful horse riding and making great dishes and singing old songs, it won’t take a year to seize them. But 10 items in Turkmenistan must be noticed by everyone visiting the region.

1. See the racehorses of Akhaltek. The horses of Turkmen are world renowned. Queens and presidents are gifted. Songs are written and in their names monuments are created. Horses from Akhaltek are an important export article. With a couple in the saddle, every horsemen in the world is proud. The horses of Akhaltek were often used as warhorses. They’re perfect for riding faucons too. They say Turkmen horses are as agile as birds, and even a falcon will take over.

2. Touch the footprints of extinct dinosaurs. Turkmen “Dinosaur Plateau” is world renowned – a large calcareous plateau on a slope, four football pitches in size, with many dinosaur footprints. The peculiarities of these large triple tracks in the western slope of the Kugitan region are not merely that they are the largest reserve of dinosaur tracks in the world, and not even that the longest of them span for a couple of millennia. Their traces are rare in the world (Megalasaurus, Iguanodon and Tyrannosaurus).

3. See Yangi-Kala Canyon’s “fire fortresses.” You can render those lovely pictures occasionally, as in Yangi-Kala Canyon, where the old sea once existed. Terrible sheer steep steeps that plunge down for several hundred meters exceptionally cut by the winds and rains. Here, depending on the daylight and sun, you can see how rocks change their colors. Shiny white in the sunlight of the afternoon, canyons are exceptionally marvelous as everything around the place transforms into red and fiery color.

4. Come to the “Hell Door.” In the early seventies, it was a popular site in Turkmen near the village of Derweze, which is called the ‘gate.’ But in 1971 geologists opened a canyon where they crashed with machinery and transportation into the wide pit. So they wanted to burn it out to keep the cavern from leaking radioactive gases. “Within a few days fire will stop,” – they would say to calm the inhabitants of the village of Derweze.

5. Taking a step back in time for 2300 years. The remains of “Old Nisa” Parthian fortress listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List are not that far removed from Ashgabat, an ancient monument. It was a residence of the Arshakid dynasty and the capital of the prominent Parthian Kingdom, dating from 3 B.C. In A.D. 3. The old Nisa was a fortress complex (shape of the incorrect pentagon), a rectangle, and a bastion (the word Mitridarkert in ancient times). The walls of the fortress will be 9 meters high and 43 rectangular towers were signed.

6. Recognize a region that has been reborn. In the planet there are no capital cities that have not been swept off the earth and revived. There are only two towns in Japan that were bombed. Turkmen capital Ashgabat was ravaged by the terrible earthquake of 1948 that claimed to have taken the lives of nearly 10 000 people, according to official documents. This is more than in Nagasaki and nearly the same as in Hiroshima.

7. Understand the Turkmen tapestry’s script. Turkmen tapestries and Akhaltek horses are known around the world. Not all visitors will buy a pedigree racehorse and take it forever. But you can take a marvelous Turkmen tapestry, with a centuries-old recollection of its 50 years old style (even a little armchair tap) – it’s a must. You will learn the history of tapestry weaving, that every Turkmen tribe has its own particular pattern in the Ashgabat Carpet Museum.

8. Hang in the breeze in Kunya-Urgench thousands of years of history. The old capital city of Khorezm’s North has been a wealthy and prosperous city with fine buildings and skilful masters for many decades. The Sultan Mamun Ibn Mamun Academy also had a large Medieval cultural and business center. In Kunya-Urgench lived and worked a legendary person, Avicenna, the great scientist Biruni and many other influential thought-makers of that day. Not only scientists and masters attracted the rich capital of Khorezm-shahs province.

9. Walk the shadow of Central Asia’s ancient city. In the period of the Margian civilisation, Merv oasis was settled in the 3-2 centuries B.C. Merv’s origin is filled with mysteries, only something is obvious – the first writings mentioned appeared around 8-6 centuries B.C in the Avesto chronicles. Throughout its history, Merv lived up and down several times. It was one of the Parthian Empire’s centres. With the aid of hundreds of libraries, Merv had become a book center since the Arab conquest.

10. Scuba diving in a world of melons. Turkmen melons with Akhaltek horses and Turkmen tapestries are in one side. It’s a country’s pride. The nation celebrates a special holiday every second Sunday of August – Turkmen melon (Gawun bayramy) day, breeding and melon breeding competition every year. In Turkmenistan, there are roughly 430 kinds of melons. Moreover, in May the earlier kinds (“Kyrk-gunluk”) matured, and in October the latest (the “Garry-Kyz”).
